Bone Mineral Densitometry

Overview

By evaluating the mineral composition of your spine and hips, radiologists utilise a non-invasive procedure called bone mineral densitometry to evaluate the strength of your bones. Our bones often lose part of their calcium as we age. They become more fragile and prone to fractures as a result of calcium loss. Low bone mass is a term used to describe mild loss. Osteoporosis is a more serious loss of bone density.

What is it advised for?

It is used to detect osteoporosis in women (especially post-menopausal women) and men (those above 40 years of age).

Osteoporosis is to blame for 80% of all fractures in persons 50 and older.
